Diamonds, being acquired from nature come in many natural shapes and sizes, and both these factors affect its price. If ever you visit a jewelry shop, the jeweler is most likely to show at least these nine shapes of diamonds:

• Pear-shaped diamonds

Even if two diamonds have the same shape, they would look different, because each has its own size and weight. The type of setting given to a diamond also changes its looks. Apart from that, you’ll notice that the same ring on being worn by two different hands, gives two different impressions and looks, depending on the size and shape of the hands.

The shape and cut of a diamond are two different things, though most people don’t seem to realize that. Shape is naturally inherited, and refers to the geometrical dimensions of diamond, while cut is manmade.

Cuts are given by artisans to increase its brilliance and that’s a very skilled job. By creating different angles and details, the light on passing thru the diamond is reflected back and makes it sparkle.

The job of the artisan is to increase this sparkling effect. The price of a diamond depends on the cuts given to it by the artisan.

Availability of diamonds in all possible shapes makes it rather difficult to choose one for you. You just have to try different shapes and see which looks more impressive and pleases you the most in your ring or necklace.

Choosing a diamond for somebody else is difficult and altogether different matter. Usually, one buys it for a loved one, say for one’s fiancée. As an engagement ring, women like to have diamond in traditional round shape, while there may be some who prefer to have something in a different shape. The saying goes that a young woman, hopelessly romantic, would like it in the shape of a heart.

The other parameters that decide the shape of diamonds for rings are determined by the shape and size of the wearer’s hand. Someone with long slender fingers would look elegant with a pear shaped diamond. Despite its availability in many shapes, round diamond is traditionally associated with engagement rings. Rings with round diamonds are considered “classic” with diamonds typically set in gold or platinum. Shapes other than round are termed “fancy”.
