Since natural diamonds are mined, the process of deriving them from nature severely affects the environs and with the world getting increasingly conscious of environments people looked for ways and techniques of developing diamonds without affecting the environments.
Another serious drawback of mining of diamonds has been the abuse of human rights. That resulted to the development of moissanite, which has all the characteristics of diamond.
As a matter of fact, it’s more brilliant than diamonds and some, who compare its brightness to gaudy, “disco ball” effect, do not appreciate this feature. But it’s true that you can’t distinguish a moissanite from a diamond thru naked eyes.
Its other features making it comparable to diamond are:
Strength
Diamond continues to be the hardest material known to man. Its hardness measures 10 on Mohrs scale, whereas it measures 9.5 for Moissanite.
Fire
Fire represents the ability of the gem to scatter light in colors of spectrum. Charles & Colvard, manufacturers of moissanite claim that their product comes with a dispersion of 0.104, which is about 2.4 more than a diamond.
Brilliance
Brilliance represents the ability of the stone to reflect light. Charles & Colvard claim moissanite to have a refractive index of 2.65-2.69, against 2.42 of a diamond.
Girdle
The edge encircling the crown of a cut stone is known as girdle. Girdles of a diamond are left un polished, but in case of a moissanite these are always polished.
Color
Diamond Nexus Labs report that it’s possible to make a pure white moissanite, which appears to a little gray or green. Though pure white diamonds are very rare, the fact remains that they do exist. People are often unaware that the clear diamonds usually have a yellowish tinge.
Cost
As per the estimates of Diamond Nexus Labs the price of moissanite should be around $525 per carat. The price of a diamond depends on its cut, color, clarity and carats. It may interest you to learn London’s Moussaieff Jewelers bought the most expensive diamond in Hong Kong in 2007. Priced at $7.98 million it weighed 6.04 carats, meaning $1.32 million per carat.
Toughness
Both, moissanite and diamonds are very strong gems and would last for generations since they can bear the day-to-day wear and tear.
