The characteristics of Moissanite and such man made diamonds or diamond simulates are quite different. These are quite cheap, compared to natural diamonds. As an increasing number of people become aware of the issues of environs and human rights caused by natural diamonds, manmade diamonds are beginning to gain popularity.
Moissanite
Moissanite is a manmade jewel, derived from silicone carbide, which is too rare and small sized in nature to be used for jewelry.
Moissanite is more brilliant than a diamond or a diamond simulate because of its high refractive index, nearly twice of a diamond. Because of its double refraction, moissanite sparkles in natural light, but may appear dull indoors or under incandescent lighting.
Man Made Diamond
Man made diamonds or synthetic diamonds have the same composition as natural diamonds, but created in labs. The downside of manmade diamonds is that you get them in colored only, as the cost of producing colorless diamonds is not viable for commercial purposes.
Another limitation is that created diamonds don’t come in all sizes and shapes. Continued technological developments in this field are likely to yield manmade diamonds in any size, shape and color at appropriate prices.
Cubic Zirconia
The most preferred diamond simulates are Cubic zirconia, derived from chemical composition of zirconium oxide. You get it in varying qualities, some badly made have low quality, while high quality ones can’t be easily distinguished from a natural diamond.
What differentiates cubic zirconia from moissanite is its color and composition. Moissanite with a higher refractive index is sparklier than cubic zirconia and tends to inherit slightly greenish tint.
Synthetic And Simulate
It’s not difficult to know the difference between the two: a synthetic has the same composition and characteristics as of a natural one, but a simulate only looks similar. Moissanite is manmade or synthetic, made from synthetic silicon carbide.
A simulate has the same appearance, but different properties. Cubic zirconia is a diamond simulate, as its chemical composition is totally different from that of a diamond or moissanite.
Considerations
You should take into view the cost and how you intend using a manmade or simulated diamond. Moissanite by itself is a jewel and can be very expensive, though significantly less than natural diamonds. Think of having a beautiful man-made colored diamond at affordable prices.
