Going by their history, diamonds in that era were mainly used for two purposes: As a talisman to keep evil spirits at bay and to seek protection during battles. They were also valued for their characteristic ability to reflect light.

Middle Ages Of Diamond History
Diamonds started getting popular during this time, and many of the famous diamonds, including the Mountain of Light and the Blue Hope, both from India, were realized. At present India is known the world over for polishing of diamonds.
It was around this period that people started evaluating diamonds for their worth. Prior to this, diamonds were appreciated for their mythical powers only. As more and more people started developing interest in these valuable natural stones, mine owners started circulating stories that diamonds had poisonous nature. Their intention was to discourage workers from swallowing these stones to smuggle them out of the mining area.
It was only at this time of diamond history that people started acknowledging worth of diamonds and that caused a boom for their demand. The demand exceeded all expectations and supply of diamonds from India started dwindling. Simultaneously, diamonds mines were discovered in South Africa, near the Orange River that catered to the requirements of buyers all over the world.
