It’s not all that difficult to make out a fake diamond if you take some simple steps. The looks of cubic zirconia are so close to a diamond that it is almost impossible to distinguish the two thru a naked eye.
Diamonds are very expensive and if you are out to buy a piece of expensive jewelry studded with a diamond, it’s important to understand that you are buying a genuine diamond. Here is how you can differentiate between a diamond and a cubic zirconia.
You just need the following items:
- Newspaper
- Pane of glass
- Gram scale
• Keep a piece of newspaper at the back of the stone. If you are able to read the newspaper through the stone, you are not looking at a real diamond. Diamonds have built-in facets that distort their transparency.
• Try scratching a piece of glass with the given stone. A real diamond is an extremely hard material that will scratch glass, but cubic zirconia won’t. As various synthetic stones can cause small scratches, one shouldn’t rely only on this test.
• Blow your breath on the stone as if trying to fog up a window. Diamonds are unable to contain heat, so if the fog takes a few seconds to disappear you are not holding a genuine diamond.
• Weigh the stone against a definite diamond of the same carat. A cubic zirconia is heavier than diamond. So, if both the stones weigh almost equal, you have a diamond.
